Pull-O-Rama: March '10

It�s time for another comic book Pull-O-Rama, where we present an assortment of recent comics and let you know how much they rock, whether they�re not quite up to par ... or if you should skip them altogether. This time we'll flip through the pages of Buffy the Vampire Slayer #33, taste the fruity side of chicken in Chew #9, and run with knives in Detective Comics #862.

Twilight, the master villain barreling through the Buffy comics lately, finally removes his mask this issue. Slayers have sacrificed themselves, good soldiers have died, and the Scooby gang has done more than their fair share of running and implementing different battle plans. Their enemy has caused heartache and continues to spell trouble for Buffy's crew, who recently traded their powers for a tactical, non-magical advantage that backfired. The fight that ensued spilled blood on both sides, and the godly return struck Buffy the hardest. She now possesses the energy of all the deceased slayers: two hundred and six girls.

Script writer Brad Meltzer has turned Buffy Summers into a traditional superhero commonly found in the funny pages, giving her even more enhanced strength and the ability to fly. However, he also reminds us of the burden that comes attached to such power, and Buffy views it in a way that frightens a Slayer most. Meltzer beautifully crafts this scene, which expresses the supportive, unique friendship that Buffy and Xander share. Meanwhile, the kidnapped Giles informs a confused Faith and the admirably brave Andrew as to Twilight's true identity, which is recognizable from the character's voice. Questions as to the upcoming storyline course through the issue, and Twilight's big reveal (all spoilers aside) garners even more complications. The final scene, which depicts Buffy and Angel's confrontation, arguably drags on a bit too long, though. All minor complaints aside, this issue's impact on the series justifies any temporarily rocky footing and bursts with that Whedon 'verse c harm that has captivated audiences since the show reached fruition.

Showcase: March '10

Welcome to another graphic novel Showcase! This time we'll defend Opal City in Starman Omnibus Vol. 2, join Mercer in Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and battle with might and magic in I Kill Giants Vol. 1.

James Robinson flicks a cosmic rod and revives the dusty Starman legacy, brushing up the dents and polishing over the comic's outdated visage with modernistic flair. We previously examined the first omnibus here at Impulse Creations, and now it's time to browse the pages of the second mega-sized installment. While the first volume packed quite an eventful punch, debuting Jack Knight as reluctant successor to his father and first Starman, Ted Knight, Starman Omnibus Vol. 2 grazes the bustling and bright Opal City�a hub that welcomes superheroes, coaxes mysticism from alleys and street lights, and awakens new generations of villainy.

The Mist, arch-nemesis to the original Starman, bumbles about in a locked cell while barely recalling his own name as his daughter assumes her father's fearful title. But the sequel omnibus�bundling Showcase '95 #12, Starman #17-29, Showcase '96 #4-5, Starman Annual #1�contains little of Nash or her simmering agendas. In fact, this omnibus resembles a simple hodge podge of interconnecting stories with different contributing artists gathering under Robinson's enchanting banner and huddling around Tony Harris' main arc visuals. Robinson, who weaves tales easily and thoughtfully, contentedly sketches out a fascinating cast of characters and deepens every curve, perfects every dimple, and carefully places every freckle of personality. Starman Omnibus Vol. 2 stacks up as a character dossier that consumes quite a bit of time before anything of importance really expands. The writer takes small strides in progressing the overarching story, namely involving the summoner Merritt whose immortality draws from a central poster aka demon gateway. The comics also introduce minor side villains and guest star the Sandman, but mostly relationships are developed and characters' back-stories are fleshed out, making them more believable.

New Search Enhancements

Our ever-growing product database can sometimes make finding certain items difficult if you don't know where its located or the exact words used in the name so we've begun implementing some new search fields to help you narrow things down. In addition to searching by title, description, and publisher, we've now added "Genre", "Character or Group" and "Item Type". With these fields, you can now find items like all the Spider-Man action figures without needing to know that those are listed as Marvel figures and without having to scroll past other figures to find Spider-Man. Just enter "Spider-Man" as the Character or Group and select "Action Figures" as the Item Type and you'll find just what you're looking for.

This can also be used similarly to find character guest-appearances in other titles and books featuring a character who's name doesn't appear in the title.

Although these fields are set up and searchable now, adding the data to the items for those fields will require a great deal of manual entry so it will take some time to produce search results for all items but this will improve daily. If you have requests for certain items or item types you'd like to see set up though just let us know and we'll make those requests a priority.

This time we'll flip through the pages of The Twelve: Spearhead, vote Pixie high school queen in X-Men: Pixie Strikes Back #2, and watch Hulk insult Thor's hair in Hulk: Let the Battle Begin.

At WWII's close, the Nazis cryogenically suspended twelve superheroes who, in the 21st-century's dawn, would band together again as the Twelve. The jumbo one-shot Spearhead #1 captures their 1940s efforts as they battle the enemy front lines alongside the Phantom Reporter, a street vigilante tasked with accompanying his fellow crime fighters and penning spirit-raising war journalism for Americans back home. Chris Weston writes an enthralling reflection that documents heroes who implement superhuman powers or whose mere bravery propels them, provokes thoughtful matters that alternate super soldier history illuminates in a manner akin to Alan Moore's Watchmen, and establishes a modern interest.

Spearhead defies the aging, yellow color now often associated with WWII nonfiction and freshly portrays the tumultuous historical era through the eyes of a costumed reporter who walks unsteadily beside super-powered avengers. The Phantom Reporter's all-too-human musings sheds a kind of wisdom that his mightier peers cannot encompass.

Some of Weston's ideas concerning wartime fears lurk under the book's surface. For instance, Dynamic Man pummels a German regime whilst a radio energetically rattles on about Aryan supermen. Already fitting a blond hair and blue eyes description, just the superhero's presence unnerves in a world-changing way that recalls anxiety-inducing foreign tactics. Weston stitches other powerful messages into the comic's forefront, as well. The Phantom Reporter reminds us that the soldiers unarmed with intimidating strengths contribute more than their superhuman war counterparts, and they overcome the worthiest challenges. Interestingly, "P.R." recognizes that fact, which seems to elude even Captain America. The writer deepens the comic through these various techniques; he depicts genuine hero community relationships, foreshadows future problems between warring nations, and marks important Marvel figures such as Nick Fury, as well.

Last week, we discussed some of the plans we're considering to bring you more services and features. Those plans include a blog and/or a podcast, more interviews and other feature articles, serialized fiction, enhancements to the store search engine, background information on characters and titles, cross-indexing of comic issues that have been reprinted in trade paperbacks, and more.

So far, we haven't received much feedback which makes some of the more costly projects unlikely as they don't serve a purpose if there isn't much interest so please contact us to let us know what you're intrested in.

One additional suggestion that we have received a few requests for though is a resource for answering questions about comics and other related entertainment (characters, publishers, movies, stories, etc.). If this is something you'd be interested in as well or if you have other suggestions be sure to make your voice heard.

Exploring Underground: Interview With Steve Lieber

Steve Lieber and Jeff Parker's Underground from Image Comics concludes next week. If you're not on board with the environmental adventure that takes a dangerous turn, then dive in and enjoy. Series artist Lieber agreed to answer some of our questions about the comic that's off-the-cave-wall exciting, and writer Jeff Parker jumps in, as well.

Impulse Creations: Thanks for sitting down with us, Steve, and agreeing to talk about your work on Underground! Can you tell us a little about the comic?

Steve Lieber: Underground is a comic about a fight over a big cave in a small town. Our heroes, Wes Fischer [Ed. note: the female lead] and Seth Ridge, are two Park Rangers in Kentucky. They come into conflict with some locals over what to do with the cave: preserve it for the naturalists or open it up for the tourists. Misunderstandings quickly escalate into violence, and the result is a deadly chase through the cave.

Impulse: How did you become involved with Underground?

Lieber: It was my idea! I'd been thinking about it for several years, doing research and trying to get a handle on who the characters were. I talked about the story with Jeff Parker, who immediately demonstrated that he understood the material better than I did. So I brought him aboard to write it.

Impulse: What about the environmental story appeals to you, personally?

Pull-O-Rama: February '10

It�s time for another comic book Pull-O-Rama, where we present an assortment of recent comics and let you know how much they rock, whether they�re not quite up to par ... or if you should skip them altogether. This time we'll flip through the pages of Grimm Fairy Tales #44, hear fallen presidents speak in Resurrection #8, spectate a witch hunt in Salem's Daughter #3, and revisit one of Joss Whedon's most memorable stories in Angel: A Hole in the World #3.

Zenescope Entertainment offered us an early look at this Wednesday's Grimm Fairy Tales #44. Joe Brusha revisions the classic Devil's Brother fairy tale. As we glance back on Fenton Bruce's life, we learn how he came under the devil's service. After saving the soldier's life, the devil promised him a perfect life filled with luxury in exchange for Fenton's unquestioned loyalty.

From start to finish, the writer takes us on a wild tour of the devil's private club. In fact, the enthralling story actually encourages us to walk beside him as Fenton fulfills his contract. Paul Roper does more than create excellently rendered panels. He plays with shadows and wields deathly images guaranteed to make you shiver. Roper grants the comic a surprisingly authentic feel, and Brusha keeps our eyes glued to the pages.

Marvel Meltdown: February '10

Welcome to an all new Marvel Meltdown, true believers! Each month we�ll select three upcoming Marvel comic books and let you know whether or not they�re worth buying. This time we'll flip through the pages of Psylocke #4, exchange not-so-witty quips in Uncanny X-Men #521, and save America from its most evil icon in Captain America #603.

The Ol' Canucklehead and Psylocke (Betsy Braddock) duel claw to mental blast this week, and things could get ugly. Visiting Japan on a special mission, Braddock learned that she's not the only one gunning for Matsu'o Tsurayaba, the man who involuntarily turned her into a psychic assassin years ago and more recently obliterated her former body. Talk about closure. Psylocke and an assassin named Jinn, both determined to strike the killing blow, soon discover that Matsu'o's provocations aren't what they seem. Logan, angrier than ever, annually tortures Matsu'o in remembrance of his past flame Mariko Yashida's fate. Mariko once begged a torn Wolverine to end her misery, and Matsu'o dealt the poison that would have slowly killed her. Now fellow X-Men Wolverine and Psylocke clash: One wants to continue hurting Matsu'o, and the other endeavors to grant Matsu'o's wish despite his wrongdoings. But capping Matsu'o's suffering won't be easy with an out-of-control Wolverine standing in t he way.

The Part Four issue�written by Chris Yost and illustrated by Harvey Tolibao, inked by Sandu Florea, and colored by Jay David Ramos�churns out an odd mix. While the art and overall writing flourishes, instilling thoughtful emotion and depicting battle action in near equal amounts, the plot wavers inconsistently. Throughout the comic, Psylocke attempts to understand Wolverine's plight on both a personal and psychic level, and tapping into his mind throws her quite a curve ball. Wolverine doesn't plan on backing down from this fight�he wants Matsu'o to live the same agony he must also endure, and the currently empathetic Psylocke aims to do otherwise. Calming a raging mutant takes more than words, though, and since psychic manipulation fails to dent Wolverine's resolve, the purple-haired ex-super model must work her persuasion another way. Unfortunately, the way she picks lacks believability, especially considering the building narration.

Showcase: February '10

Welcome to the first 2010 graphic novel Showcase! This time we'll annihilate zombies in The Walking Dead Compendium Volume 1, meet Presidents and secret agents in The Umbrella Academy: Dallas, and watch small legends epically unfold in Mouse Guard Volume 2: Winter 1152.

When today's pop culture suffers from an overabundance of zombie fiction, putting a fresh spin on what's stinking old instead of dropping flesh bits everywhere you walk can be difficult. Exploring the genre's deeper waters, scribe Robert Kirkman and artist Tony Moore accomplish just that. Their visually excellent black and white comic, The Walking Dead, carries a burden similar stories lack: The Walking Dead ventures behind the chain-link fence and exploits the survival horror from all angles, including its characters' fates before, during, and after the infection's terror.

Like zombies hording a steaming pile of brains, The Walking Dead ultimately thrives on deep character interaction. After a gunshot wound sends him into a coma, officer Rick Grimes wakes to a deserted hospital populated only by walking corpses. Panicked and confused, Rick manages to escape the building unscathed and greets the blunt end of a shovel. Two survivors, Morgan Jones and his son Duane, explain what they know about the current disaster and offer their assistance until Rick heads toward Atlanta to search for his wife and child. After a few days he finds his family and a survivor camp, but each day in the apocalypse demands lethal mistakes, incites near-misses, and teaches valuable lessons. Sitting ducks don't last long in the living dead's open playground, but meandering between locales in the hopes of finding temporary residence, supplies, or even other stragglers doesn't come cheap, either. Not to mention the changing seasons bring additional dangers.

Pull-O-Rama: January '10

It�s time for another comic book Pull-O-Rama, where we present an assortment of recent comics and let you know how much they rock, whether they�re not quite up to par ... or if you should skip them altogether. This time we'll flip through the pages of Pilot Season: Demonic #1, chase ghosts in Darkness: Shadows and Flame, chop some limbs with Kick-Ass #8, and play mind games in Escape from Wonderland #4.

A human with the face of a demon�not your everyday premise, but writer Robert Kirkman and artist Joe Benitez fashion such a character in their unconventional Demonic comic, a runner in this year's Pilot Season fan-decided competition. The issue begins with a scene depicting a normal husband and wife and then shatters the happy illusion with an otherworldly spawn that looks like Aliens and a hot pink Furby got into a fight. After a bit of persuasion, Scott dons a tattered cloak and a mask resembling the demon that haunts him.

By day Scott works for the police, but by night he resumes more unpleasant activities. As his counterpart "Demonic," Scott executes dangerous local criminals, counting heads in order to appease his demon oppressor and sneak into his bed before dawn. But the authorities are ready this time, and they ambush the masked killer unexpectedly. Because Scott refuses to fulfill some currently unknown deal with the demon he unwillingly serves, he instead exchanges the lives of innumerable lawbreakers�and in this particular case, the innocent�to spare his wife and daughter. With fifteen slaughtered police officers' blood on his hands, the guilt is quickly becoming too much to bear. And to push the matter further, NYPD's Captain Andrews has just assigned him on the Demonic case with a rather envious partner, Hendricks, who takes the blame for the prior night's massacre.

Pilot: Mass Effect: Redemption

Welcome to another installment of Pilot! As comic book readers ourselves, we at Impulse know how important it is to get a quality bang for money spent on a single issue. Comic prices add up, after all! So every so often we�ll take an in-depth look at a new title or mini-series. We�ll give you the heads up on whether it's is worth getting into or passing up. If it's good, then you'll know. If it's not so good ... well, we read it so you don't have to.

Another video game series enters the comic book world this month with Mass Effect: Redemption #1 (of 4), penned by the lead writer of the upcoming Mass Effect 2, Mac Walters. Published by Dark Horse, the mini-series agrees to test its weight against the demands of an audience who favors a printed, visual medium. The transition between mediums�and in this case, from the screen to the page�usually requires a certain toll, and many times the cost proves high. Either the nature of the source gives way to convolution or the end product doesn't try to function as a new work. I might not be a Mass Effect familiar, but the comic feeds more than just the interests of the original fans: By stepping foot into comic book waters, readers with little or zero Mass Effect education are going to flip through the pages. In fact, the point of the transfer lies with reaching new audiences and inviting them to dip into the video game experience, as well.
