Welcome!

Pull-O-Rama

Welcome to another brand spankin’ new addition to the Impulse Creations forum. Yeah, that’s right, no showcase this week. I thought I’d shake up the new year by proudly presenting Comic Book Pull-O-Rama, where I pull (get it?) together a random assortment of very recent comics and let you know how much they rock, or not so much---or whether you should bypass them altogether. Our regular showcase installment will be featured next week, so hold on to your comics!

Here we go! Luckily for you, every issue in this batch is golden.

BATMAN #684 continues Dennis O’Neil’s “Last Days of Gotham” story from DETECTIVE COMICS #851. First off, I want to take a moment to welcome newcomer artist Guillem March to the DC team. He’s done a few comics now for DC (JOKER’S ASYLUM: POISON IVY, DETECTIVE #851, BATMAN #684), and his work has absolutely blown me away. He’s drawn the best Poison Ivy I’ve ever seen, for one thing; his visual portrayals of these Batman characters are leaving me slack-jawed in awe. And this issue of BATMAN is no different. His Nightwing, his Gordon, his Alfred---jeez, even his Bollock---they’re all fantastic.

Welcome!

Pilot: Vigilante

Welcome to the first installment of a brand new run of articles here on the Impulse Creations forum. As comic book readers ourselves, we at Impulse know how important it is to get a quality bang for money spent on a single issue. Comic prices add up, after all! So every so often we’ll take an in-depth look at the pilot issue of a new title or mini-series. We’ll keep tabs on it for awhile, too---letting you know whether it's worth getting into or passing up. If it's good, then you'll know. If it's not so good ... well, we read it so you don't have to.

This week DC gave the enigmatic new incarnation of Vigilante---previously seen in NIGHTWING and the GOTHAM UNDERGROUND mini-series---his own title. Now, as you’re all aware, DC is making some crazy changes with its comics. Between cancellations and hiatuses, readers are unfairly out-of-the-loop with what’s going on with what is one of the top two comic book publishers. But to make up for their, ahem, crap, they’ve given us a new title to jump into that falls in line with Batman territory.

Let’s take a look at VIGILANTE #1 (written by Marv Wolfman with pencils by Rick Leonardi). Since the latest character to claim the alias was introduced, nothing but mystery has followed him. In fact, it really isn’t clear whether this Vigilante is one of the past characters or someone brand new. Just for the sake of clarity, though, we’re going to think of this Vigilante as the latter---because according to the name he’s given in the pilot comic by his ally J.J., this guy’s a newbie called “Dorian.”

INCOGNITO - a twisted mash-up of noir and super-heroics - by best-selling creators Ed Brubaker (The Death of Captain America) and Sean Phillips(Marvel Zombies) with Val Staples on colors. Welcome!

Too Short or Just Right? (Steph's Comic Stack)

Hey, gang! Last time we talked about the popularity of comic books in movies and even television, and this time around I thought we could follow-up by tackling two upcoming superhero films in particular: Watchmen and Kick-Ass. What do these comics have in common, you might ask---besides the obvious? Well, both are based on a limited number of issues; while they are different from each other in many respects, they both pose a similar problem when faced with the extreme success of the recent comic book movie, The Dark Knight.

First off, let’s take a look at Watchmen and Kick-Ass. Not only are these two comics highly popular and successful---and rightfully so---but they barely reach double digits in issues. Watchmen began in 1986 as a planned graphic novel of twelve parts, while Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.’s Kick-Ass series---which has been flying off the shelves at an alarming rate---hasn’t even hit the seventh issue mark. Yet they’re both being made into movies; in fact, Watchmen hits theaters this March. So the question is … Is there enough material to justify these movies?

An All New Age (Steph's Comic Stack)

Today is a great time to be alive for comic book fans: the trend of comic book movies and even TV shows is hotter now than ever before. This past summer was dominated by superhero movies---including The Dark Knight, which broke all kinds of barriers and raised the bar for the comic medium. And with the most highly regarded graphic novel, Watchmen, being released as for the first time as a movie since the comic premiered in 1986, comic book fans everywhere are ecstatic as respect and interest in the medium continue to grow. But does the present craze for comic books and media really bring prestige for the genre, or is it all just a Hollywood fad?

With great power, there must also come great responsibility - and when those in power abuse it, it's the people's responsibility to remove them. The year is 1933, and New York City is not-so-secretly run by corrupt politicians, crooked cops, big businesses…and suave gangland bosses like New York's worst, the Goblin. But when a fateful spider-bite gives the young rabble-rouser Peter Parker the power to fight the mobster who killed his Uncle Ben, will even that be enough? It's a tangled web of Great Depression pulp, with familiar faces like you've never seen them before! His name was Skurge, and men and god alike knew him as Executioner…and the legend of his life and death reverberate across the walls of Heaven itself. In Asgard, though…no one can quite remember WHAT happened to him. How did he live? How did he die? And why does everyone in Asgard remember it differently? There's trickery at hand so vile even Loki joins Thor in trying to unravel it. Some comics are giant-sized. Some are king-sized. Only THIS comic can be called GOD-SIZED! By Matt Fraction (THOR: AGES OF THUNDER) and a roster of all-star artists including Doug Braithwaite (SECRET INVASION: THOR), Dan Brereton (IMMORTAL IRON FIST ANNUAL) and Marko Djurdjevic (THOR #7-8)!

Impulse Creations is Hiring!

While the economy is taking its toll on many industries, our low prices and dedication to service continue to attract new customers and we need to expand our staff so that we can continue to provide the service we're known for. If you or someone you know are in the Tulsa area, we're looking for the right individual to grow into a lead position in our order processing department.

This would start as a part-time position with duties including pulling, packing, and shipping orders as well as entering and putting away inventory, and keeping track of supplies to gain a familiarity with all areas of the operation. Familiarity with comics is a plus but not required. What we're looking for though is someone with a strong work ethic who can work independently and efficiently to eventually develop into a full-time position in charge of much of the day to day inbound and outbound processes.

Interested individuals should contact us for more details.

Showcase: Holiday Edition

This week, Steph examines Dragon Prince, the re-release of Watchmen, and Batman: Private Casebook. With something for everyone, you'll want to check these out for yourself and for those on your holiday gift list:

It’s almost that time of year! That’s right, if you haven’t been able to tell from the advertisements and decorations that have crowded stores since October, the holidays are coming up fast. In this special showcase edition, I’ve carefully chosen three comics that will make perfect gifts this year for your favorite comic book fans: the Dragon Prince mini-series, Watchmen #1 (new printing), and Batman: Private Casebook. Wallet running a little light? No problem! I’ve hand-picked each for a variety of price ranges.

Writer Ron Marz is on a roll over in the Top Cow world right now. Besides penning the main part of the Broken Trinity crossover, Marz is presenting a limited series called Dragon Prince. I’ve personally been following the mini-series since it started, and it’s a ton of fun. Dragons might not be a new thing in fiction, but the whole comic---the way it’s put together by Marz and artist Lee Moder---has a highly original feel to it. It might be all-ages, but don’t let that fool you into thinking only kids will enjoy this one.

Watchmen's Rorschach Profiled

This week we begin a new series of comic profiles. These are intended to provide background material and a history of titles, characters, notable storylines and more and will eventually be collected and expanded on as an informational resource for all our visitors. If you have suggestions about what you'd like to see covered, please post in the forum so we can see which subjects generate the most interest.

Now, on to Rorschach of the Watchmen:

Born in 1940 as Walter Joseph Kovacs, Rorschach is the detective-like character in the 1986 DC-published graphic novel Watchmen, which was written by Alan Moore with art by Dave Gibbons.

At 5’6” tall and 140 lbs, he is in excellent physical condition. His mother’s name was Sylvia Joanna Kovacs, formerly Sylvia Glick. His father’s name is unknown.

As a costumed vigilante, Rorschach wears a tattered brown trench coat, a ragged hat, dark gloves that match his purple pinstriped pants, a white scarf, brown elevator shoes, and a highly recognizable inkblot mask. He often carries a grapple gun and disguises his voice.

Welcome!

Batmania: The Rise and all of an Icon (Steph's Comic Stack)

When Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight hit theaters this summer as a thrilling and brilliant achievement of casting, directing, writing, and overall performance, diehard Batman fans everywhere were already more than pumped thanks to the refreshingly successful viral marketing they had enjoyed over the numerous months leading to the movie’s release. But it wasn’t just self-acclaimed comic book fans who were looking forward to the sequel; countless moviegoers enjoyed the film---multiple times over.

What resulted has been the biggest surge of Batmania in years. So why is it that, if these newly recruited Batman lovers were to turn to the pages of his comic titles, they would find the words “RIP” glaring back at them? Why is it that in a new height of Batman popularity, rumors of his possible demise, or at least his downfall and ruination, prevail in all their tattered and foreboding glory?
Creator Lora Innes writes and illustrates the tale of 17-year-old Beatrice 'Bea' Whaley, a student who begins having vivid dreams about a brave and handsome soldier named Alan Warren… a member of an elite group known as Knowlton's Rangers that fought during the Revolutionary War. Prone to keeping her head in the clouds, Bea welcomes her nightly adventures in 1776; filled with danger and romance they give her much to muse about the next day. But it is not long before Beatrice questions whether her dreams are simply dreams or something more… each issue of this new historical action romance features a full 25 pages of story and art.

Welcome!

Out With the Graysons, In With the New

You may have heard about the planned "The Graysons" TV series that was axed before it began. This week, Steph gives her thoughts on what might make for a good replacement series:

In a move that would have succeeded Smallville---hitting its eighth season now and running dry---the CW and Warner Bros. Television were planning The Graysons, a Smallville-esque show that would follow Batman’s first sidekick, Dick Grayson, in his pre-Robin days: circus and … yeah, that’s pretty much all. Many fans weren’t too keen toward the idea, and to their relief the idea recently flopped for good. Way to dodge that bullet, huh, Robin? (Okay, that was kind of cruel.)

But with pre-Robin show canned, the slot is left hanging in the air---flying trapeze style. There’s no word on whether it’ll be filled with another young superhero show or not, but comic book fans everywhere are buzzing about what they’d love to see instead. Here are five picks of the litter.

Search for the truth inside this new miniseries based on the hit FOX television show! A research scientist, recently agitated by paranoid fears, is found dead in his suburban D.C. apartment. His sister refuses to accept the coroner's ruling that his death was suicide from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Federal investigator Scully discovers forensic details that would seem to defy rational explanation and when her partner Agent Mulder learns the scientist was working on a top-secret project for a government contractor, Mulder becomes agitated b
