EPISODE NINE
by Dan Wallace
Wargen Rast’s armor had been breached in the explosion that ripped
him free of the control seat. The severed connections sparked fitfully and
several primary systems were failing to respond. Backups were assessing the
damage and slowly kicking in to restore functions but Areon was on him in
an instant.
The powerful little Atraellian slammed into his back as he struggled
to stand and threw him back down to the ground. Areon’s fingers seized his
arm with the grip of a vice and he felt himself being hoisted back to his
feet, swung around, and sent flying. He came crashing down several yards
away and rolled to a painful stop.
The world was still spinning around him when he heard what sounded
like hail. Shards of metal and other debris rained against him with increasing
force and the wind began to howl. Only Lyssa could manipulate air currents
like that here inside the building and it was a sound he knew all too well.
Powerful as the wind was, it had not yet reached its full intensity.
With his hydraulics coming back online, Rast was able to resist being blown
back off his feet for the moment. While he still had the ability to do so,
he took aim at Lyssa with the laser unit in his gauntlet. The crimson beam
fired but went wildly off target as his damaged glove exploded. He howled
in pain but was cut off by a powerful fist impacting against the side of
his helmet.
Despite the protection of his battlesuit, his ear rang from Areon’s
blow and he tasted blood in his mouth. Warning lights flashed inside his
helmet and his armor felt heavy as power continued to leak from it. Things
were falling apart rapidly and his mind raced to find a way to turn things
around.
