EPISODE TEN
by Dan Wallace
Devin pulled Cory’s limp body up against him. He lifted her head to his
chest and felt for a pulse. Her heart was still beating but she was hardly
breathing at all. She seamed to be slowly slipping away and he didn’t know
what to do to bring her back.
He knew her body temperature was dropping though and he could at
least do something about that. He cautiously passed his hands along her
arms and shoulders, generating heat to warm her. With luck, it might help
to stabilize her but there was no telling how far gone she already was.
It just wasn’t supposed to end like this. He was here to protect her
and yet he’d already failed before they even really began.
The whole Guard project meant nothing to him without Cory. What was
the point of trying to save a galaxy bent on destroying itself when he
couldn’t save the one life that meant everything to him? Cory would
selflessly sacrifice herself for those nameless masses but Devin knew
himself to be less noble. Nothing and no one mattered to him more than the
wonderful woman he cradled in his arms and the universe could go to hell if
he had to lose her.
Tears rolled down his cheek but quickly boiled away as his own
temperature rose, surging up from deep inside.
